The one-year Master of Arts in International Relations is an innovative program offering a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of international relations (IR).
You will explore the key topic areas within the dynamic field of international relations, such as geoeconomics, modern warfare and the impact of popular culture on global foreign policy. Offered in two exciting study formats, you can either focus on developing an original research project or gain international work experience.
Whichever option you choose, you will gain exposure to the most significant questions about international security and the global economy as well as apply interdisciplinary thinking to critically analyze the IR challenges of the 21st century.
The one-year MA in International Relations offers two study options.
The Vienna track is taught at CEU’s campus in Vienna. It’s a research-oriented path where students choose a specialization and conduct a research project in one year. You can choose one of the following areas to match your professional and academic interests:
In addition to exposure to the main teaching areas in the program, students will also receive thorough preparation in academic writing and research design and methods. Approaching the IR agenda from the academic perspective, you will learn various mainstream tools and techniques necessary to successfully plan and execute independent empirical research. You will benefit from the dynamic learning environment where you will engage in interdepartmental exchanges with lecturers and peers in and outside your program curriculum.
The New York City track is a practice-oriented option where you apply theoretical concepts and methods of the discipline of international relations in a real-life work environment. You will begin your academic year in Vienna and move to the Bard MA in Global Studies program in New York City for the winter and spring terms. You will complete coursework and a mandatory IR internship with an organization working on global affairs. Instead of a thesis, you will conclude your program with a capstone project. Students in the New York City track cannot choose specializations.
This one-year Master of Arts in International Relations program is designed for students seeking considerable international relations expertise.
You will expand your foundational knowledge of IR with one of the specializations and launch your academic inquiry into the fast-paced discipline of international relations. Both tracks offer a practice-oriented approach for those looking to embark on a professional career in various subfields of international relations, such as foreign policy, human rights, international law or diplomacy.
Furthermore, both tracks emphasize strong academic writing and critical thinking skills essential for success in any international relations career.
