The Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the exploration of gender in the context of significant social categories such as race, nation, ethnicity, class, sexuality, age, ability and more.
You will analyze social processes, theories, institutions and the material conditions of life through the lens of integrative gender studies, contributing to the development of the field with original academic research. You will use theoretical studies and empirical inquiry methods to examine diversified patterns of gendered social and cultural change and apply interdisciplinary research approaches to understand the complexity of gender issues presently discussed in scholarship.
Students are encouraged to combine the critique of androcentrism with a critique of Eurocentric perspectives and epistemologies, mainly—but not exclusively—in Central and Eastern Europe. Within this framework, gender is understood as an element and product of processes of global, regional and local development. You will further elaborate on the significance and role of gender by considering it in the context of history, policy, economics and international relations studies.
During the PhD in Comparative Gender Studies program, you will develop competencies in traditional disciplinary skills in the social sciences and humanities with inquiry-based learning, formulating new questions and techniques arising from emerging or marginalized perspectives and areas of study. You will attend mandatory and elective courses in advanced methodological training in archival research, textual analysis, qualitative interviewing, participant observation, theoretical inquiry or discourse analysis to gain the necessary skills for conducting an independent doctoral research project grounded in systematic analysis.
Accredited in both the US and Austria, the Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Gender Studies program combines elements of North American and European style degrees with coursework, a supervised research project and teaching experience. You will gain advanced interdisciplinary research skills necessary to actively contribute to the field of gender studies. While the program offers excellent preparation for the international academic job market, you will also gain a range of transferrable skills and knowledge that will increase your employability in the private and public sectors. Students expand on their oral and written presentation skills, complex problem-solving, project management and cultural awareness, which are valuable in professions that require a nuanced understanding of social and cultural issues, such as human resources, communications and diversity management.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s level degree (or equivalent) and a master's level degree (or equivalent) in any field from a recognized university or institution of higher education. Alternatively, you must provide documentation indicating that you will earn such a degree before enrollment in a CEU doctoral course of study. If you hold a five-year master’s level degree, you are not required to have a bachelor’s degree.
A substantial background in gender studies is required, which must be demonstrated through the application and at the interview stage.
In addition to meeting the general CEU admissions requirements, applicants must submit the following documents:
