Description:

The Doctor of Philosophy in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies program is a research-oriented training that sets new standards of education in historical studies at a doctoral level.  

Internationally recognized for its methodological richness and the application of innovative research tools, the curriculum of this program stresses the interconnectedness of various disciplines through interdisciplinary comparative research techniques. The primary aims of the doctoral program in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies are to encourage transdisciplinary medievalist research, uncover new perspectives, and develop new approaches to the analysis of historical material.  

You will explore the conceptual and practical methods of comparative historical studies through in-depth mandatory and elective courses to build expertise in formulating, designing, leading and presenting independent historical research projects at a doctoral level. You will be guided by a faculty of recognized experts in their respective fields through your independent doctoral research project and receive individual support to complete your dissertation successfully within four years.  

How the PhD Works:

During the first year of the Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies doctoral program, you will focus on coursework that prepares you for the comprehensive exam, which focuses on your chosen topics of interest within the historical periods. As part of your comprehensive exam, you will also discuss your research dissertation proposal.   

You will follow a structured curriculum with specialized courses in theory, methodology and historiography to strengthen your historical research skills. You will build upon your foundational knowledge with in-depth elective courses that delve into specific topics on the historical studies agenda, such as cultural heritage, period literature, urban history or inequality through the ages. You will engage with comparative research on political, social, economic and religious history, as well as archeology and material culture of late antiquity, the Middle Ages and the early modern periods. You may also choose from a wide selection of source language elective courses, including Ancient Greek, Ottoman Turkish or Latin, at beginner, intermediate or advanced levels.   

Who Is This Program For:

The Doctor of Philosophy in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies program offers doctoral-level education matching the highest international standards in historical studies with a focus on comparative theory and methods in an interdisciplinary setting. You will gain a solid knowledge of key academic debates in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern studies and actively contribute to the development of your chosen topic of interest through a practice-oriented curriculum.  

You will also acquire a range of transferable skills, such as critical thinking, complex problem-solving, oral and written presentation skills, the art of professional debating,and qualitative and quantitative methods for studying historical sources. You will also gain experience developing and participating in doctoral research projects and authoring scientific studies in English, as well as teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Many alumni of the PhD program in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies are pursuing regional or international careers in universities, museums, archives or cultural heritage institutions.
