The Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy program at CEU is a comprehensive training that combines analytical and historical approaches to philosophy.
This PhD program builds on your knowledge of the core philosophical theories and methodologies through inquiry-based learning and an interdisciplinary research approach, encouraging students to frame contemporary philosophical questions in the context of their specializations.
The mandatory curriculum consists of research and practice-oriented Departmental Colloquia and seminars, during which students hear talks from professional philosophers on diverse topics, participate in advanced philosophical debates and receive feedback from peers and faculty on their dissertation progress. The primary aim of this program is to offer a broad selection of in-depth courses and guide you in the successful formulation, design, implementation and presentation of an original doctoral research project in the field of theoretical philosophy.

During the first year of the Philosophy doctoral program, you will focus on the mandatory coursework and producing a paper of approximately 10,000 words (but no longer than 12,000 words and no shorter than 8,000 words). The paper should be a draft of a dissertation chapter. You will compose a doctoral thesis plan (2-3 pages long without the bibliography) to summarize your research plans and describe the problem or area that you will investigate and the planned direction of the research, especially in relation to the existing body of knowledge.
First-year studies end with the comprehensive exam, during which students may be asked questions concerning their paper, thesis plan and their progress in philosophy studies. Completing all requirements in the first year will formally admit the student to PhD candidacy in Philosophy at CEU.

As a doctoral candidate, you will be expected to actively participate in the academic life of the department and attend seminars, lectures and programs, including the annual in-house graduate conference. You will build upon your foundational knowledge of philosophy and enrich your understanding of the major philosophical topics of our times.
