This two-year programme is focused mainly on European Union law and international law.
The Master’s degree programme in Law pursues innovation of legal education in accordance with foreign, mainly Western European models, laying emphasis on gaining practical skills through clinical education and moot courts. Graduates will be able to analytically and synthetically consider all legal fields with a theoretical, philosophical, and ethical grounding.
Graduates will be able to practically apply their knowledge, especially in multinational law offices, multinational business corporations, international governmental and non-governmental organizations, and central governmental authorities. Graduates of the programme will acquire a full Master degree in Laws that allows them to enrol to any of the professional chambers in Slovakia or to practice any of the legal professions.
The study programme in the field of law combines theoretical knowledge and practical skills in orientation in the legal order and its interpretation, in the creation, implementation and application of law. Law represents an interconnected, internally structured system of generally binding norms for the functioning of human society in accordance with the principles of democracy under the rule of law. Contemporary law is characterized by polycentrism, i.e. creation in several centers and at several levels. Specifically, it concerns the national level, the level of European Union law and the level of international law.
The study of law takes place from the perspective of all these levels in their mutual contexts, including from the point of view of legal comparatism, i.e. comparing the legal regulations of several states. When solving specific factual situations, the student learns to recognize where to look for a relevant legal norm and how to interpret it, while often connecting legal norms from the several levels mentioned, or several legal areas.
The study is fully in accordance with the principles of a democracy, rule of law, respect for the human being, protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, and also with the principles of honest legal professional and scientific activity.
The graduate carries out more demanding work independently in the field of public administration and in the private, primarily commercial sphere or works as a candidate for legal professions (judiciary, prosecutor's office, advocacy, notary, etc.), an employee in the judicial sphere.
The graduate obtains the prerequisites for working in national and multinational corporations or national and international governmental and non-governmental organizations that require the filling of job positions by graduates with knowledge of wider social and transnational context of law, in-depth and complex orientation in international law and the law of the European Union.
