The Aesthetics (Specialisation in Classics) MA program enables you to engage in scholarship and research at Masters level within the sphere of aesthetics, philosophies and theories of art.
The basic module provides both a chronological overview of the most important stages of philosophical thinking about art and in-depth analysis of the main issues in contemporary philosophical discourse on art. The Classical Studies specialisation provides theoretical knowledge of the arts of antiquity and the early Middle Ages, as well as practical knowledge of how to deal with ancient art in contemporary culture.
The programme aims to promote an open, discursive, research-based approach to learning in Philosophies of Art in order to support your individual professional development and prepare you for advanced research or professional practice. The core module in Aesthetics consists mainly of courses that promote critical understanding of theories, contextual issues and debates in a specialist area of art.
The Classics specialisation is a combination of lectures and seminars with individual tutorials and the opportunity for on-the-job training in archives and museums. It also includes field trips to relevant historical sites.
The curriculum will develop your research skills and theoretical, historical knowledge in both contemporary and classical art-related fields. During their training, students of the programme can acquire highly developed critical, evaluative, reflective and communication skills. To achieve this, the curriculum uses research and writing to develop modes of questioning, speculative thinking and critical evaluation.
