The Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science at CEU is a research-oriented interdisciplinary program in political science with five specialized tracks that reflect the major strengths and interests of our faculty. It is a four-year, full-time and fully funded program that requires you to live in Vienna.
Students choose between five tailored tracks that correspond to the major practice areas in the broad field of political science and explore advanced coursework and research topics relevant to their academic and professional aspirations. You may choose from:
The Comparative and International Political Economy track investigates the interconnectedness of social, political and economic realms within the domestic, comparative and international economic context. The overlapping processes of globalization, macroregional integration and changing relations between public authorities and private market actors require scholars to apply new interdisciplinary approaches to investigate the complexity of the new politico-economic phenomena and test these theoretical propositions empirically.
The Comparative Politics track focuses on comparative scholarly studies of political institutions, behavior and processes, enabling applicants with diverse academic backgrounds to gain advanced skills in empirical analyses of any political phenomena. This track offers an extensive choice of advanced empirical methods courses and often involves students in joint research with faculty members.
The International Relations track reflects the traditions of IR scholarship in North America, the UK and Western Europe, especially in the context of conflict and security studies, international law and global governance, populism in international politics, foreign policy analysis and IR theory. In this track, you will engage with various methodological tools and disciplinary concepts that will enable you to analyze and explain the material, textual, social and technical factors that affect world politics.
The Political Theory track bridges the Doctoral Program in Political Science and the Doctoral Program in Philosophy through close cooperation in training doctoral students. The track focuses on moral and political philosophy and institutional political theory. It attracts scholars who plan to work on normative problems in politics, addressing foundational theoretical questions and questions related to specific political institutions and practices.
The Public Policy track is suitable for scholars interested in researching the cause, function, nature and outcome of public policy. The program is taught by faculty specializing in different policymaking levels, including the regional, national, European Union and global levels, providing students with a comprehensive overview of the typical policymaking mechanisms. Research and study in the Public Policy track draws on quantitative and qualitative methodologies and emphasizes empirically driven analysis. The core courses in the track focus on developing professional research and analytical skills in European and international public policy, comparative policy analysis and political economy.
Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science supports political science scholars in developing subject matter expertise and a broad set of skills critical to securing work placement in the international academic job market. Students also actively participate in internal and external projects, contributing to the growing body of research in political science. You will develop research networks outside of your home institution and draw upon outside research expertise. You will also acquire a range of transferable skills, such as complex problem-solving, oral and written presentation skills, the art of professional debating and qualitative and quantitative research methods.
As a graduate of the doctoral program in Political Science, you will be well prepared to compete for positions at prestigious academic institutions and in other professional areas where critical thinking, communication and advanced research skills are particularly important, such as public administration, data analysis, publishing, journalism and media.
