Norway

With over 25,000 foreign nationals enrolled at universities in Norway, diversity is one of the core strengths of the highly respected Norwegian educational system.

Admission and studying

In Norway, most Bachelors and Masters begin in August. Application deadlines vary between universities and are also different depending on your citizenship:

  • Students from EU/EEA countries: can usually apply by February or March
  • Non-EU/EEA students: typically have to apply between October and December the year before

If you want to come to Norway for your degree, do your research early to make sure you don't miss application dates.

Academic and formal admission requirements are set by the universities. If you plan to apply for a Master’s in Norway, you may have to show that your previous academic education includes courses that amount to at least one-and-a-half years of studies in a related subject.

How much does it cost to study in Norway?

Students from countries of the EU or EEA generally don't have to pay tuition fees at public universities and can study for free.

Students from other countries, however, have to pay tuition fees to study in Norway. These fees were introduced in 2023 and typically range from 130,000 to 400,000 NOK pear year (ca. €11,000 to €35,000). The exact fees depend on a lot on the university and the degree subject.

There are also fees to join the student association, which pays for the exams at the end of the semester. But that won’t set you back more than 700 NOK (around 60 euros). These fees also bring with them some benefits such as on-campus health services, counselling, access to sports facilities, as well as reduced prices for public transport and cultural activities.

What is the cost of living in Norway?

In addition to great education at high-quality universities, Norway offers a fantastic quality of life. But the cost of living is quite high, as Norway is one of the most expensive countries in Europe. The official estimate for student cost of living is ca. 140,000 NOK (ca. €12,000), which is also the amount that students who need a visa need to prove they have; but this estimate is comparably low to what you'll actually spend.

Nature

Aside from the quality of its education, Norway offers a unique experience for nature lovers. You are never far from the coast with its impressive fjords; never far from awe-inspiring climbing or skiing hot spots; and you get to experience the midnight sun in the summer, and exciting snowy winters.
