European Universities You Can Still Apply to for 2025

Author: Sara S叩nchez Grau — Last update: 9 May 2025

Every year, thousands of students miss early university application deadlines. Sometimes because they weren’t ready, didn’t know the dates, or simply made a late decision to study abroad. But missing a deadline doesn’t mean missing out. In fact, many universities across Europe keep their doors open longer than you might expect.

Whether you’re still weighing your options or just discovered the perfect programme, there are still plenty of institutions that accept applications well into the summer or even right up until the start of the semester. Keep reading to learn which universities in Europe have late or rolling application deadlines for 2025.

If you’re wondering, “Can I still apply to university in Europe?” - the answer is: yes! Read on to find out where.

Why Some Universities Have Later Deadlines:

Not all universities follow the same rigid admissions calendar. While many public institutions have early fixed deadlines - often in January or March -others offer more flexibility. Here are the main reasons why some universities accept applications later in the year:

  • Different Academic Calendars: Some universities, especially in Southern and Eastern Europe, start their academic year in October or even later. That gives them more time to accept applications through the summer.
  • Rolling Admissions: Certain universities (mostly private ones) operate on a rolling admissions basis. This means they review applications as they come in and continue accepting students until all places are filled. As long as there’s space and time for visa processing, you can still get in.
  • Private vs Public Institutions: Private universities often have more streamlined admissions processes and are less tied to national deadlines. They may also be more flexible in attracting international students, allowing applications as late as August or September.
  • International Focus: Universities that actively recruit international students understand that not everyone is familiar with early deadlines. To accommodate diverse applicants, many extend their timelines or offer multiple intake periods (e.g. Fall and Spring).
  • Late Openings or Extra Rounds: In some countries, like the UK (through Clearing) or Germany (via Hochschulstart.de), places can open up again over the summer due to cancellations or unfilled quotas.

Universities in Europe Still Accepting Applications for 2025:

Below is a list of universities that are known for their late application deadlines, rolling admissions, or multiple intakes. While deadlines can vary by programme and nationality (especially for non-EU students), these institutions are typically more flexible than others:

Lancaster University Leipzig Late applications accepted Late applications accepted  Germany
EU Business School Multiple intakes Multiple intakes Spain
Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) 31 July  31 March Belgium

Tips for Last-Minute Applications:

If you’re applying close to the deadline - or after many have passed - don’t panic. With the right approach, you can still secure a study place. Here are some tips to help you succeed:

  • Get Your Documents in Order Quickly: Prepare the essentials: transcripts, diploma, passport, personal statement, and proof of English proficiency (like TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test). If you’re waiting on results, check if the university accepts provisional documents.
  • Contact Admissions Directly: Many universities with late deadlines don’t advertise them clearly. Email the admissions team to ask if they’re still accepting applications. A quick, polite message can save you time and open doors.
  • Check Visa Deadlines: Even if a university accepts late applications, your country’s student visa processing time may be a limiting factor. If you're applying from outside the EU, make sure there’s enough time for your visa to be issued before the semester starts.
  • Be Flexible with Start Dates: Some universities such as EU Business School or Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences offer many intakes during the year. If you just missed the fall deadline, spring may be a great alternative.

Alternatives If You Miss University Deadlines:

Don't worry if every deadline has passed and you're not able to start university this year. You still have valuable options to keep your academic plans moving forward.

  • Start with a Foundation Programme: Foundation years are designed for students who need academic or language preparation. Many start in the fall or even in January, such as the ones at Lancaster University Leipzig, and completing one can help you get a spot in a related degree the following year.
  • Apply for Spring (January/February) Intakes: Several universities in Europe offer degrees that begin in the spring semester. Applications typically stay open until October or November for these intakes.
  • Study a Short-Term or Language Course Abroad: If you’re eager to start something, consider a short-term study abroad programme or an intensive language course. These options build skills, improve your application for next year, and keep your momentum going.
  • Online Degrees or Distance Learning: Some institutions such as OPIT - Open Institute of Technology or Tomorrow University of Applied Sciences offer online degrees with flexible start dates throughout the year. These can be a solid alternative, especially if relocating right away isn’t feasible.
  • Gain Experience and Reapply Stronger: If nothing else works, take the time to work, volunteer, or pursue a personal project. You’ll build experience and a stronger application when the next admission cycle opens.
  • Do an Internship Abroad: Interning abroad is a great way to gain professional experience, build language skills, and enhance your CV while you wait for the next intake. It can also help you clarify your study goals and stand out in future applications.
