The Bachelor's degree programme Biological Chemistry is designed to give students a scientific background and insight that will enable them to enter the labour market. The programme also provides qualified theoretical knowledge from both above-mentioned areas.
The programme is fully taught in English, which constitutes an essential communication tool, both in multinational companies as well as on international research teams.
Ample time is dedicated to the teaching of mathematics, physics and information technology. In addition to theoretical knowledge, great emphasis is placed on practical skills. More than six hours per week, which represent one-fourth of the teaching time, are devoted to practical training. The programme also provides practical training in private research institutions. One of the advantages of the study programme is a relatively small target group, approximately 20 students, allowing for improved teaching focused on individuals.
Graduates of the study programme Biological Chemistry receive the following skills:
Graduates of the Bachelor’s study programme Biological Chemistry shall be able to competently perform work of a technical nature with some degree of autonomy. Graduates will gain good theoretical and practical knowledge of fundamental biological and chemical disciplines, including the basics of physics, mathematics, bioinformatics and biostatistics. Graduates will be able to use selected methods of biological and chemical disciplines enabling them to work with devices and biological materials in basic and applied research and manufacturing practices.
Graduates will also be able to apply conventional biological and chemical methods in their laboratory research. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills in research methods at different levels of organisations for living systems. Graduates can apply for positions in a wide range of departments within the Slovak Academy of Sciences, universities, the health sector, agriculture and forestry, as well as the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
The international character of the programme, in combination with English as the main language of instruction, qualifies the graduate for employment in a multinational environment. Graduates may also continue in their master’s studies at Comenius University or abroad.
