Description:

The Master's programme in Human Geography addresses the relationship between human activities and their spatial environment  in a number of topical fields.

It takes a critical, emancipatory approach to the field by engaging with the less privileged in society, but also trying to contribute to positive change and development in many different fields.  Within the Master's Human Geography, you have a choice between six Master's specialisations.

Something for you?

  • This specialisation has a strong focus on the socio-spatial dimensions of conflict and in/security at multiple scales.
  • You will be encouraged to take a multidisciplinary approach, relating human geography and geopolitics to the fields of political science, sociology, anthropology, international relations, border studies, and development studies.
  • In this specialisation you are encouraged to conduct first-hand research on conflict, conflict resolution and transformation, security and policing practices, and also to pay attention to processes of post-conflict reconstruction.
  • This specialisation is offered in collaboration with the Centre for International Conflict - Analysis & Management (CICAM).
  • This programme has an above-average score compared to the national average on four of the five core subjects (Source: Keuzegids 2025).

Possible specialisations:

  • Conflicts, Territories and Identities: You’ll come to understand the backgrounds and causes, the mental and physical borders related to (international) conflicts, war and terrorism as well the strategies and challenges organisations intervening in these conflicts deal with.
  • Cultural Geography and Tourism: Learn to understand and interpret advanced theories and practices of leisure and tourism and their influence on the social and physical environment.
  • New Economic Geographies, Ecologies and Business Innovation: Study the role of regions as locations for economic activities. Focus on the meaning of local and global culture, and policy-making at various spatial levels.
  • Europe: Borders, Identity and Governance: Learn more about crucial geopolitical and social developments in Europe. Dive into current debates on issues related to sovereignty and identity, European mobility, the European internal market and cross-border cooperation.
  • Globalisation, Migration and Development: Investigate the effects of globalisation and migration processes on economies, societies and resources on different parts of the world. The main focus lies on the Global South and its interaction with the Global North.
  • Urban and Cultural Geography: Focus on how the city is represented and how city images emerge and are contested. You’ll study the hybrid nature and the daily struggles in urban life, cultural diversity and the political economy of the city.
  • Dual Degree Programme with the Universitas Gadjah Mada: Do you want to benefit from a substantial global experience? In that case, the Dual Degree Programme with the Universitas Gadjah Mada in Indonesia might be something for you!

Career prospects:

The Master's specialisation in Conflicts, Territories and Identities provides graduates entry into rapidly growing sectors of the job market, be it government, business or academia.

Graduates will be able to apply the scientific insights and practical skills acquired to topics as varied as (post)colonialism, geopolitics, failing states, (religious and national) identities, discrimination and integration, bordering and othering processes, natural resources, humanitarian aid, diplomacy, peace operations.

Our alumni find jobs such as:

  • Policy advisor in local and national governments.
  • Researcher in public or private think tanks or research institutes.
  • Expert or advisory position with local and international organisations (UN, NGOs, humanitarian actors) dealing with conflicts or engaging in volatile geopolitical spaces of contestation.
  • Our mission is also to nurture students as engaged citizens who can drive social change through activism and critical thinking.
