Josephine is studying for the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at Middlesex University London. Originally from Nigeria, she followed her brother’s example to go abroad for her studies - and is enjoying every minute of it! Find out what she has to say about the LLB at Middlesex after her first year of studies:
Why did you choose Middlesex University London?
I chose Middlesex because I believed that studying law at Middlesex will put me on the right path to achieve my goal of being a barrister in Nigeria. My brother graduated from Middlesex’s Dubai campus, and recommended it for its good reputation in the legal field.
I also liked that it was situated in London. When I looked further into it, I discovered it was a university with such a diverse and vibrant community with different activities going on. The law students’ reviews were convincing and the synopses of the course structure were straightforward.
The facilities provided by Middlesex were exceptional. For example, the Hendon Town Hall Chambers is a great place for law students to moot and get relevant experience for a legal career. The clinical legal education [a hands-on approach to teaching law] also played a part in my decision to come to Middlesex, because they ensure students have tangible work experience from reputable organisations.
What do you learn in your study programme?
Studying for the LLB has boosted both my academic and interpersonal skills which are essential in practising law - such as research, academic writing and communication skills. During my studies, I have been able to acquire exceptional knowledge in different areas of law such as public law, contract law, and the English legal system.
How are you enjoying London? Is it a good place for international students?
London is a definitely a tourist attraction and a great place to be! There is so much cultural diversity and vibrancy in the city. Wherever you go, you’ll find people from all nations and walks of life. I believe it is a friendly environment from students all over the world and it is not difficult to feel at home in such a beautiful city.
There is are just so many activities students can enjoy, and the fact that everywhere is just a tube ride away is amazing! There are international stores, and cuisines that cater to every student’s taste. I would advise international students to always ask questions, take advantage of the many student discounts, but always stay focused on your studies.

What is the most surprising thing you learned after you started studying in the UK?
I knew the UK was diverse but when I started studying here I realised it was even more diverse than I thought. Almost everyone I have met has an origin of another country. Also, I have learnt to always be punctual, and take advantage of different opportunities given to me on a daily basis.
How expensive is it to study in London?
London is a major city which makes the cost of living more expensive than other cities in the UK. Students should expect to find accommodation potentially more expensive than elsewhere. International students planning to study in London should plan a realistic budget, use every student deal and wisely use a savings account - otherwise they might spend money on things they might not necessarily need.
Do you participate in any extracurricular activities?
I participate in the University’s dance society and in fitness activities. There is a wide range of activities, but I limited myself to these two as they are the only ones I can accommodate with my busy schedule.
What are your fellow students like?
The students in my programme are very multicultural and more diverse in age difference than I expected.
Has Brexit affected your decision to study in the UK?
Brexit was not a factor in my decision to study in the UK. I wanted to get a remarkable law degree which will qualify me for law school.
What do you plan on doing after graduation?
I plan on going to the Nigerian Law School after my graduation.
What advice would you give international students considering to do an LLB in the UK?
I would advise international students to go for it! The British LLB is a globally recognised degree with different opportunities while studying, such as jobs and legal internship. Also, use the support system that is provided.
How would you sum up your experience at Middlesex University in one sentence?
It has been a rewarding investment that has led me to achieve things which I thought were impossible.
