Aalborg

Located in the North of Denmark, Aalborg is a small city whose foundation is industry and education. Two large universities provide exciting experiences for students from around the world. For those choosing to study in Denmark, Aalborg offers the ideal college atmosphere and is rife with historical landmarks.

The preeminent university in the area is undoubtedly Aalborg University (AAU), with 21,000 students - two thirds of those who chose to study in Aalborg. Aalborg University is a relatively young center for education, established in 1974 after the merger of several smaller schools. With its nontraditional curriculum, and a satellite campus in Copenhagen, Aalborg University is ideal for international students looking to focus their studies on experimental, problem-centered projects. AAU offers beginners courses for international students and employees unversed in Danish; an exciting endeavour for those eager to learn a new tongue, but certainly no prerequisite to take part in everyday life, thanks to the Danes’ remarkably high proficiency in English. Aalborg is also home to the University College of Northern Denmark, hosting over 10,000 students in full degree programs, many of which are of international origin. Working in conjunction with Aalborg University, UCN is very attractive to international students due to its focus on providing students with skill-sets that directly appeal to employers.

Aalborg is an ideal place to explore the deep history of Denmark thanks to its wide selection of museums and cultural centers. One of the oldest museums, the Aalborg Historical Museum, was established in 1863 as a historical record for Aalborg and neighboring areas, and is home to principal artifacts from the viking and iron ages retrieved during several major excavations in the late 1800’s. Aalborg is also a major attraction to international students because it is home to the relatively new Kunsten Museum of Modern Art. For students looking for a respite from the demanding curriculum of the universities in Aalborg, there are several cultural centers, including Aalborgs Kongres and Kultur Center, that offer a wide array of fun and entertainment. Offering over 100 classical music and dance presentations each year, the Center can accommodate any taste.
