Kaunas is Lithuania’s second-largest city with a population of 298,000 as of 2015 (577,000 in the metropolitan area). The city rests at the confluence of country’s two largest rivers – Neris and Nemunas.
While a bit smaller than Vilnius, the capital city, Kaunas is beautiful in its own right. Being one of the most popular Lithuanian tourist destinations it has a great deal to offer to visitors. Kaunas, due to its history, is frequently known as the „temporary capital“ of Lithuania. In fact, the city was Lithuania's capital during the 1920s and 1930s, which has left Kaunas city with a lot of glorious architectural sights of that period. The city's heroic past is still present in the Town Hall Square as well as the remnants of a large medieval castle on the banks of the Nemunas river. The city also presents the visitor with a multitude of historical, zoological and aviation museums, statues of grand dukes, freedom fighters and poets, and Ąžuolynas - the largest urban stand of oak trees in Europe.
What makes Kaunas really appealing for students is the fact that it hosts some of the best Lithuanian universities and offers a friendly, multicultural environment everyone can become a part of.
