Living in Paris as a student

For students, Paris offers the perfect mix of culture, academics, and city life. With over 130 museums, world-famous galleries, and historical sites, it is a paradise for art and history enthusiasts.

On top of that, the city is a thriving business hub, home to major multinational corporations, finance centers, and innovation hubs. Students in business fields can tap into a wealth of networking opportunities, internships, and career prospects, all within the dynamic atmosphere of one of Europe’s top economic capitals.

Paris is also known for its diverse student population, hosting numerous festivals, concerts, and exhibitions throughout the year, ensuring there’s always something to do beyond the classroom.

Renting a student apartment in Paris typically ranges from €600 to €1,200 per month, depending on location and accommodation type. Like many major European cities, the demand for student housing is high, so make sure to start looking well in advance to secure affordable options and be aware of potential scams. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

50Ȼ Tip: While many degrees are offered in English and most people speak the language, learning basic French will make your daily life more comfortable and will help you adapt to the customs and social norms more easily.

Universities

Paris is home to some of the world’s top universities and business schools, making it an ideal destination for international students seeking academic excellence and diverse learning opportunities. Here are a few:

  • Sorbonne University: One of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world, it’s renowned for humanities, social sciences, and law.
  • Sciences Po: A top institution for political science and international relations with one of the top global network of alumni.
  • HEC Paris: One of Europe’s leading business schools, offering elite programs in management, finance, and entrepreneurship

Job opportunities

As a global hub for business, finance, fashion, and the arts, Paris presents exceptional career opportunities for students looking to build a professional network and gain international work experience.

While balancing work and studies can be challenging, the city provides a dynamic job market with many flexible opportunities, making it easier for students to support themselves while gaining valuable experience in one of the world’s most influential cities.

International students with a valid visa can work up around 20 hours per week, allowing them to gain experience and supplement their living expenses. Many students find part-time jobs in cafés, restaurants, and retail stores, while others secure internships in multinational companies, particularly in business, finance, and tech sectors.

France also has a minimum wage policy, meaning students can expect to earn around €11.65 per hour before taxes. Additionally, universities often have job boards where students can find tutoring or on-campus work opportunities.

Getting there and around

Getting to Paris is fairly easy, with multiple transportation options available. Most international students fly into Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), the main airport, or Orly Airport (ORY), which handles both domestic and international flights.

Paris is also well-connected by train, with Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon offering routes to and from cities across Europe.

Public transportation is also convenient and student-friendly. The yearly Navigo Imagine R student pass costs around €350, allowing unlimited travel across the city. Cycling is another popular alternative, with many bike rentals available at affordable rates.

Our recommendation? For a more scenic journey and if you prefer a more relaxed way to explore, walking is also a great choice, as many attractions are within walking distance from one another.
