Description:

This Arts and Humanities Research Master's programme underscores the theoretical and methodological aspects of the humanities in order to contribute to academic depth, interdisciplinarity and future flexibility that extends beyond a single field.

The programme offers three specialisations: Historical Studies, Literary Studies and Art and Visual Culture. It will prepare you to conduct original research in which you consider complex problems with a multidisciplinary outlook.

It’s an indispensable stepping stone for students wanting to pursue an academic career as many of our graduates go on to become PhD candidates.

Something for you?

  • Preparation for a research-based career in academia, in cultural institutions and other domains.
  • Extensive freedom to design a large part of your curriculum.
  • Individual supervision of your development as a specialist in your field.
  • Opportunity to gain experience abroad for a semester.
  • Unique combination of disciplinary and interdisciplinary components helping you to develop research skills and knowledge beyond one academic discipline.
  • A select multinational and interdisciplinary cohort of peers.

Possible specialisations:

  • Art and Visual Culture (research): Whether you wish to specialise in canonical artworks or forms of visual production like advertisement or YouTube videos, the Art and Visual Culture specialisation will develop your ability to research and analyse visual culture thoroughly.
  • Historical Studies (research): The Historical Studies specialisation is dedicated to rigorous historical research in order to obtain a deep understanding of developments of the past and to help us evaluate the merits of modern reinterpretations.
  • Literary Studies (research): In the Master's specialisation Literary Studies you will learn how to make new discoveries that will contribute to a better understanding of literary texts and how they function within society.

Career prospects:

During the Master’s programme you will gain specialist knowledge in Art and Visual Culture against the background of a broad spectrum of theories and methods in the humanities. Through your individual Master’s research, you will also have had the opportunity to concentrate on a very specific phenomenon in your own field. This combination of a broad view and a specific focus will open multiple doors for you.

Our graduates are much appreciated by employers for their research and analytical skills and for their ability to master large quantities of data and view the results of their research in a larger context.

This Research Master’s prepares a multinational group of students for careers that require advanced research competences and skills. Alumni of this programme have found positions as PhD students, researchers, policy officers, editors, curators and critics. They have worked at universities, museums, heritage institutions, archaeological agencies, publishing companies and text agencies.
