Description:

The aim of the Modelling Environmental and Biological Systems Master's program is to train students in the quantitative and theoretical investigation of complex phenomena in living systems emerging at several scales: from the single molecule to living organisms, as well as their interaction with their environment.

The Master MoBiEn brings together scientists from different laboratories and professors from our 4 departments: Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.

Programme overview:

In this sense, it offers a coherent multidisciplinary program that makes MoBiEn a unique training program whose core disciplines are Statistical Physics, Stochastic Processes, Biomechanics, Numerical Simulations, Statistical Methods, Advanced Data Analysis Techniques, and Artificial Intelligence.

Examples of teaching units :

  • Stochastic processes
  • Biological physics
  • Finite element simulation

Together with the MoBiEn pedagogical team, each student will develop a personalized research-oriented training plan that enhances his or her CV, skills and scientific interests, by preparing measurable training objectives to be achieved at the end of each year.

The training aims to prepare students for a PhD in basic research, or for professional opportunities in public or private research.

The IDIL model:

The IDIL (Interdisciplinary In lab') graduate program aims to train students through and for research via pedagogical innovation. The IDIL courses available are diversified and cover a wide range of disciplines, from bio-health to political science.

Taught entirely in English, IDIL courses offer students the opportunity to follow their courses through a unique structure based on four main aspects:

  • Learning by doing. IDIL programs place a strong emphasis on learning by doing, with in-lab units and a subsidized research internship in M1 and M2. The IDIL program opens the doors to around a hundred laboratories at the University of Montpellier, where students will be working in immersion.
  • Customized curriculum. IDIL students can tailor their course to suit their career plans and interests by selecting their courses from three different teaching units: Non Core, In-lab and Transversal. Support is provided to ensure that the student's course of study corresponds to his or her chosen orientation.
  • Introduction to a new discipline. All IDIL students must choose a Non Core teaching unit, which is an introductory course to a discipline in another IDIL pathway. For example, a Comparative Politics and Public Policy student may take an introductory course in Applied Ecological and Evolutionary Sciences. This arrangement gives students a unique profile, and is an effective way of developing interdisciplinary thinking, a major challenge in modern research.
  • Mentoring. Throughout the IDIL program, students will be coached by a researcher from the Montpellier laboratories. The mentor's role is to prepare the student for the internship, teach theory through various workshops, and develop the student's professional network.

Career outcomes:

  • Doctoral Pursuit: The IDIL courses are conducive to pursuing a doctorate.
  • Professional integration: Although IDIL courses are research-oriented, they offer an incredible amount of professional experience throughout their duration, which can be used in any professional environment. How to work as part of a team, how to manage a project, how to use data are just some of the softskills taught during this program.
