Stockholm

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and home to about 1.5 million people, making it the biggest city in all of Scandinavia. There are well over 100,000 students in the city. Thanks to many English-language study programs and the absence of tuition fees for EU citizens, the international student population is quite strong.

It’s where Nobel Prizes are awarded, where tech unicorns are born (hello, Spotify!), and where students enjoy a quality of life that’s hard to beat.

Whether you're wandering cobbled streets in the Old Town (Gamla Stan), grabbing fika (coffee and cake) with friends, or catching a DJ set in an underground club, Stockholm delivers a truly unique study experience.

Living in Stockholm as a Student

Stockholm is a very liveable city: beautiful, safe, with a broad range of recreational activities and entertainment on offer, and a very welcoming society. It also reflects many of the top reasons to study in Sweden: high-quality education, sustainability, innovation, and a strong emphasis on equality and student well-being.

The major downside is the insane housing situation. Living in Stockholm is a great experience, but it does come with a Scandinavian price tag. You can expect budgets up to par with central London or Paris as students usually spend €900 to €1,400 per month, depending on accommodation and lifestyle. Rent is the biggest cost, with student housing usually ranging from €400 to €800/month.

Many students live in student dorms managed by SSSB or other housing agencies, often with shared kitchens and great communal spaces.

50¶È»Ò Tip: Apply for housing early, Stockholm’s student accommodation is in high demand, especially in the weeks before term starts.

Job market

In general, Stockholm is the economic center of Sweden for almost any industry. However, it is well known for being one of Europe’s fastest-growing tech and innovation hubs. It has the highest number of tech startups per capita outside of Silicon Valley, so if you're in IT, business, design, or engineering, you’ll find plenty of internship and job opportunities.

English is widely spoken, and many international companies and startups operate entirely in English. But if you still can't find a job, language courses are offered free of charge for immigrants.

Universities also offer career services, networking events, and close links with industries to help you get your foot in the door.

Getting There and Around

Stockholm has a dense network of public transport options. Whether its day or night and you are within or around the city, you will find a bus, tram or train connection.

There are four airports around the city. Arlanda is the biggest by far, with about 170 domestic and international destinations. The smaller airports in Västerås and Nyköping are a bit further off, but they are serviced by many low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and are good alternatives thanks to comfortable shuttle connections.
